Featured Observation: Skillet Clubtail

This week's feature is a skillet clubtail, photographed and logged by iNaturalist user @dannyoshea in Fredericton, NB

Aptly named, Skillet Clubtails, are a species of dragonfly, previously thought to be found in only three locations in Canada, all in New Brunswick.

However, in the past decade with enhanced survey efforts including community science projects like iNaturalist, more populations have been found in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

One reason for the Skillet Clubtail's overall rarity is their need for clean, slow-running waters with a fine substrate, a rare type of habitat in southern Canada.

Le gomphe ventru est une espèce de libellule dont on pensait auparavant qu'elle n'existait qu'en trois endroits au Canada, tous au Nouveau-Brunswick.

Cependant, au cours de la dernière décennie, grâce à des efforts accrus de recensement, y compris des projets scientifiques communautaires comme iNaturalist, davantage de populations ont été découvertes en Ontario, au Québec et en Nouvelle-Écosse.

L'une des raisons de la rareté générale des gomphes ventrus est leur besoin d'eaux propres et lentes avec un substrat fin, un type d'habitat assez rare dans le sud du Canada.
