A lot of WF heron along the high tide line of the Heathcote/Avon estuary at the moment.
White faced heron were actively hunting the edges of the wetland
This heron was patrolling a flooded lawn, right outside my hotel ,after a heavy rain following a prolonged period of dry. The flood brought hundreds of worms to the surface and the bird was gorging itself, tossing back worm after worm.
It picked each worm up with the tip of its bill and then had to, literally, toss it to the back of its bill where it could be swallowed.
with a kotuku at Charlesworth Reserve
Patrolling the creek/drain alongside Charlesworth Reserve, sometimes in the company of a white heron
I couldn't see what small food this bird was avidly pecking from the water, but the camera did - note the small shrimp-like crustacean between its bill tips. It looks like its swallowing a fairy!
a small flock of herons was grazing a wet sports field picking up lots of worms
