I spotted a beached-wrecked bird carcass while patrolling Muriwai Beach. My friend, Ariel Wijaya, who I was walking with when I spotted the bird, then delivered it to Ian Mclean of Birds of New Zealand. Photos were taken and reviewed, and the general consensus was Little Bronze Cuckoo. Small, reddish-brownish bird, with rufous, black, and white undertail coverts. The bird is currently at the Auckland Museum and will be prepared as a specimen. This bird is native to Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and Australia. New record for New Zealand.

'woof' at about 32 seconds in. I'm pretty sure this bark (lifted from local dogs?) was added to local repertoire just a few years back, but perhaps it is used elsewhere too?

First New Zealand record. Saw the bird sheltering behind a small bush for around 30 minutes. It then turned and scurried out of sight behind the cliff face. 5 minutes later the bird was back in the same position behind the bush.

20 meters behind Gouland downs Hut on the Heaphy Track in amongst the forestry and tree.
I saw the bird matching the pictures in the Heaphy Track huts. Didn’t think anything of it at the time other than it was a bit different. Didn’t hear it’s all but it was hoping along low branches and the forest floor.
The bird was dark blue in colour and had an orange thingo under its beak.
While standing I’d estimate that the bird was roughly a foot and quarter or a foot and a half tall. Just a rough estimate.
Encounter was quite brief - only about 10 seconds so I didn’t really notice too much activity. It just flew onto a branch, did a couple of hops along a couple of branches and flew away again. The bird was roughly 15 meters away.

I was talking with Adrian Paterson in my office when, to our huge surprise, this painted lady butterfly(European Small Tortoiseshell!!!) flew in through my open window. I've only seen three of these butterflies before in Canterbury, and never in the winter. Very odd!
