I love my backyard

A page from my nature journal from March 25, 2017... Who says you have to make an expensive trip to an exotic location to shoot nature photography. Some decent photographs can be made right in the comfort of your own backyard! And with my 600 mm telephoto lens, I don’t even need to get up from the chair!

Early on a Saturday morning, I’ve finally got a day off to enjoy a sunrise with a cup of coffee on my back patio once again. It’s a somewhat cool 56 degrees, but the propane heater brings it up into the comfortable sixties. I could use the day off to travel to a park or wildlife refuge, but why? There are birds aplenty in my backyard.

Two Eastern Bluebirds in brilliant blue, orange and white plumage land on the string of lights over my koi pond. My wife said they were checking out the backyard birdhouses and breeding boxes last week. Perhaps they will decide to nest in one this season. It may be a mess being right over the koi pond, but quite a thrill to have them just twenty feet from our patio chairs.

As the relaxing morning and afternoon wore on, I spotted a Ruby-crowned Kinglet flitting too quickly for a photograph, but shot the usual backyard birds: Titmouse, Chickadee, Cardinal. And at the end of the day, I was still enjoying my backyard oasis. A nice sunset glow was illuminating the long grasses in the meadow behind my house while an Eastern Towhee was the last to sing for the setting sun.

March, 2017 nature journal - my first backyard birding session with a new 600mm lens! I sat quite a long time before any birds came. Other than a Robin and Ruby-crowned Kinglet, I shot the usual: Titmouse, Chickadee, Cardinal.

Beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing the pictures on I-naturalist and reminding us that we are all so blessed to see and photograph the beauty in nature present just outside our doors.
