Species I've encountered while reading Patrick O'Brian's fantastic Aubrey-Maturin series. For the uninitiated, Stephen Maturin is the ship's surgeon and an avid naturalist. He never gets to spend enough time describing new flora and fauna (his excursions generally being curtailed by the demands of the service), but his total nature-nerdery is inspiring nonetheless.
