Found at the base of an oak tree with about a 3 foot radius wide circle of fallen foliage, high moisture, slanted off the road thus frequent water.
Habitat: Fruiting body was growing on the base and roots of a live hardwood tree near a swamp environment.
Notes: Fruiting body has a woody, lateral stipe. Pileal surface is reddish orange with a tough exterior and a “varnished” appearance. The lower surface had a poroid hymenium. The hymenium was bright white-tan when fresh and stained brown when scratched or bruised.
Rationale for ID: The varnished surface and bruising poroid hymenium of this polypore immediately led me to the Ganoderma genus. Observing golden-brown ovoid spores with a truncate apex under the microscope led me to believe that this specimen is Ganoderma curtisii. Spores around 10 micrometers in size.
