Warning- slightly graphic photos
I try not to interfere with interactions like this, but you see that unassuming clump of grass in the upper left of the second photo? The salamander is rolling around trying to dislodge the snake, and the snake is holding tight. They roll right into the grass, and get tightly tangled. It's clear after a few minutes neither animal is going to free itself soon, if at all. So, I cut the grass away. The snake immediately scurried off. The salamander was sluggish, but it perked up after I moved it to the lakeshore.
