Dry-ish conifer tree plantation (mixed planting) near watered lawn. Nearest breeding spot I know for them here is about 300-400ft away (backwater slough).
During a strong wind storm, the snake had its head and fore-portions down a kangaroo rat tunnel in this dry sandy wash---probably to anchor itself from being swept away! After a few minutes of basking in the sun, it totally retreated into the shelter of the burrow.
