Collection #2 on 3/11/23:
Fruiting on big leaf maple leaves in muddy soil.
NOT ON WOOD.
Diagnostic feature: cap KOH positive(dark purple).
See images of KOH reaction and all microscopy performed.
Miscoscopy: spores dark brown in KOH.
Abundant paracystidia. Sphaeropendunculate in shape.
Pleurocystidia: fusoid ventricose to globose ventricose.
Cheilocystidia: subfusiform. Infrequent.
Trama: parallel for both gills and pilei.
Pileipellis: hymeniform, cellular(slightly angular).
Spores: Ellipsoid, smooth, dark brown in KOH. Small germ pore. Medium/Lg in size. See images of work.
“Veil” is wispy, cortinate(cottony/thin) and fleeting. Quickly disintegrates.
Gills: attached to stem appearing nearly free.
Widely spaced(compared to P. piluliformis).
Gills White when young.
Stem: thick, firm, hollow. Numerous leaves attached to base.
Spore Print: dark purple brown/nearly black in complete gill drops.
Odor: pleasant. Like drying paint.
Taste: mild.
Fruiting on leaf litter(not wood), large size, fleeting veil, thick stem, widely spaced gills appearing free. All these features would checkout for Psathyrella spadiceogrisea, however that species is completely non reactive to KOH. No KOH reaction on cap.
This collection stained heavily deep purple/nearly black on cap which is diagnostic for Psathyrella pseudovernalis.
None of the physical features or microscopic features fit for Psathyrella piluliformis(in addition to substrate also being incorrect).
Psathyrella pseudovernalis is listed as widespread in the USA but I could find no current collections of it here in WA. The features listed and presented match well for P. pseudovernalis.
Harvested the mature specimen and dehydrated for herbarium collection/genetic record after performing microscopy.
My coinciding Mushroomobserver observation below-
Found at a local farmers market. Said they were among pine trees.
