I found this adult box turtle and initially thought it either had some kind of illness or injury due to the mucus around it’s beak area.
After contacting a licensed wildlife rescuer, I kept it over night until I could drop off. In the morning, the mucus was gone, revealing what I thought could’ve been the case- a cleft lip/ palate.
Planning to confer with the rescue, but I’d like to release him where I found him, as this is an adult turtle who has thrived with this condition.
Very cool and unique experience!
