Snorkeling the South Pointe jetty at night with Victor, Gonzalo, Benjamin and Jasmine. We were worried about the visibility because of a huge amount of sargassum on the beach due to consistent winds out of the east for the last few days but decided to try anyways. We got to the beach around 9PM and smelled the sargassum from far away. We had to walk through a small hill of it near the shore and then wade through a thick mat of sargassum and murky/reddish water. Once we got to 3 feet of water it started clearing up and the visibility ended up being excellent! Almost no wave action because we were sheltered from the winds out of the southwest (8-10 knots) by the jetty.
I wasn't in bioblitz mode so didn't take too many pictures but we saw lots of cool marine life. Highlights included several small jellyfish I have never seen before (assuming they come out only at night), a squid feeding on a tiny pufferfish, a live lightning whelk moving along the sand, a nurse shark, snook, really cool red crab with big claws, tons of little shrimp and crabs near the surface and a lizardfish. We were in the water for a little over an hour. Can't wait to try this again! We didn't make it very far down the jetty because some of our group didn't have fins.

Snorkeling the South Pointe jetty at night with Gonzalo, Benjamin and Jasmine. Visibility was not nearly as good as Thursday and I am not sure why. We were in the water from around 7:50PM-9:15PM. The tides listed for Government Cut on tides4fishing.com show high tide at 8:08PM and for Miami Beach at 7:49PM, so we should have mostly been in the water during slack high tide but it was bad from when we got in at the beginning. The winds were less than 5 knots. We almost made it to the end of the jetty but turned back about 100 yards before because the visibility wasn't ideal for such deep water and our lights could only do so much.

Snorkeling along the jetty and around the beach at South Pointe with Gonzalo, Benjamin and Jasmine. Visibility was excellent closer to shore but wasn't so great further out. The water just seemed a bit hazy/smoky/foggy (not sure how else to describe it) as we got to around 10ft+ depth swimming east along the jetty. We swam about 250m, a little less than halfway down the jetty, before turning around. There was a full moon and we were swimming during slack high tide according to tides4fishing.com. Winds have been out of the South for the past several days and there was little sargassum on the beach.
Highlights were a small electric ray and gulf flounder on the sandy bottom. Jasmine unfortunately got stung by one of the little jellyfish that come out at night (this one: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/123714438 )
but thankfully the sting wasn't too bad.

Lots of mullet around, being attacked by tarpon, pelicans and osprey
