Definitely a tumbler, not connected to the ground.
Possible two species? Sitting on common cow parsnip, one observed preying on a honeybee. Both on same inflorescence, not seen on other surrounding plants of same species.

Laying on mulch under mature Juniper tree on top of volcanic hill. None appeared to be connected to the ground in any way. Wasn't sure if fungus or part of a plant but inside contained sack with brown spores and the one had distinct opening in sack like a puffball. Fairly small 1/2-3/4" and dry
Fairly large earthstars with multiple openings in spore sac like a salt and pepper shaker. Laying on scrub oak and juniper mulch under said trees on slope of creek flood bank. Many other earthstars were also present
