As this was taken with a mobile phone by my partner, it is not a good shot. But the image does show enough to indicate it is a Rakali. I saw it yesterday (25/6) in the same location, unfortunately without my camera.
A few metres from a small river. A small amount of blood on its fur on the underside. A young animal. Head to base of tail 20cm. Nose to tail tip 43cm.
Working hard to drag a dead bird (separate observation https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/223682319) along with it
I saw this sweet little Rakali on Saturday 1st June at Lerderderg Gorge about 12.30pm. It was very busy foraging and diving. I got a good video- the photos are taken from the video so not the best!
Swimming across a small pool. For two shots I have included cropped images alongside the uncropped originals. No doubt about identification; I saw the diagnostic white tail very clearly, especially just as he dived underwater.
