With Don Fraser; iNatting the Forest before a nocturnal moth survey at Tiger Creek Preserve. We were hoping for some Lake Wales Ridge endemic plants like Nolina, Zizyphus, and Dicerandra, but we found none of those. We left at 1503 and headed north, stopping along the way to iNat.

This female was with several young poults. I turned a corner in the trail, and there they were -- we scared the living bejeezus out of each other. The female ran away while the poults ran and hid. She was still looking for poults 20 minutes later.
With Don Fraser and Alice Mary Herden; our first stop of the day, I found a Common Yucca with a flower stalk over 6 feet tall (but leaning), which had one blooming flower and dozens of flowers waiting to bloom. In the one flower were maybe 7 or 8 moths, a few which flew out of the flower, while most remained.
A lifer, at least to genus ...
Of the 20 species of Tegeticula, seemingly only two -- T. Cassandra and T. intermedia -- are found in Florida. This Common Yucca (Yucca filamentosa) was growing in a recently burned, open flatwoods site.
With Don Fraser and Alice Mary Herden; our fourth stop of the day. The temperature at 0940 was sunny, 80 degrees ("feels like"84), and breezy. This spot was where all the Bidens with all the skippers were in Sep 2023; it's now all Black-eyed Susan. The plants are very dusty from the road; I found this large caterpillar (3+ inches) on a Dahoon Holly that was next to Red Maples; the caterpillar was originally mimicking -- perfectly! -- a holly branch.
We left here around 1150 and continued toward Bald Eagle Sink.
With Don Fraser, Christine Rowland, and two others; a visit to determine the feasibility of preserving a 5-acre wooded homestead in perpetuity. The weather at the start was sunny, 75 degrees ("feels like" 75), and breezy. Don and I left at 1320 and headed to lunch at Denny's.

At least 4 juveniles percjed on the same tree trunk at once.
