Small sandstone glade above cliff. Pretty sure this is a hybrid plant of Liatris compacta and L. hirsuta, both of which are present in the dry rocky, woodlands and glades above Cedar Creek Canyon. There was one plant in flower with this morphology (note sparse pubescence on leaves and phyllaries, phyllary length intermediate between compacta and hirsuta, and multiple flower heads per stem). There were multiple plants of L. hirsuta surrounding this plant - all still in early bud. I’ve seen these hybrid plants a few times before, mixed with the parents.

The flower doesn't have any unique nectar guide, maybe because it's a wet land plant that grow in low light.

In August, 2023, the Shearwood Creek Fire destroyed almost 5,000 acres in Jasper County. These observations were made on private property that had its uplands planted in longleaf pines when the fire went through. The blooming plants that have come back seem more prolific than they were before.
