Maria Leung/Don Reid have indicated that Mertensia drummondii is potentially useful for delineating KBAs (based on standard criteria which includes COSEWIC/NatureServe ranks). Specimen will be transferred from private collection to Canadian Museum of Nature; one of 14 records along the North American Arctic coast to date (2022). Current thought is that it is a Beringian relict, a species unique to glacial refugia.

I quickly must mention, before anyone sends any hate my way, this snake was encountered and documented while I was doing herp surveys in the Fort Smith area; all wildlife permits were in place and this snake encounter information was included in official reports to wildlife authorities. The snake was released unharmed shortly after photo was taken.
