The Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas) was originally introduced to Vancouver Island through anthropogenic means. M.gigas have large, rounded, radial folds that are rough and sharp. With 2 valves of the shell being slightly different in size, the right valve is slightly concave, and the colour is variable but usually an off-white. A similar relative is the Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica), which is smoother overall, and without the distinct ragged edges of the M.gigas.
