The Flora de Baja California project is designed to better understand the diversity and distribution of plants in natural areas of the Baja California peninsula and its adjacent islands in the Pacific Ocean & Gulf of California, Mexico. Our current count of native and naturalized vascular plants documented to occur in Baja California using scientific specimens is 3,551 species (including common hybrids), and 3,892 total taxa (including subspecies and varieties). These species and taxa occur in a total of 1,093 genera in 186 families. Of these 3,551 species, 3,130 (88.1%) are native to the region and 421 (11.9%) are non-native and naturalized (Rebman et al. 2016). Most of the floristic data about this region has been compiled using scientific vouchers from herbaria as the primary data source. Much of this data and other online botanical resources centered on the region can be found on the bajaflora.org website created by the San Diego Natural History Museum. It is our hope that through iNaturalist we can integrate plant observations with our scientific specimen data in order improve the overall knowledge of the flora of the Baja California peninsula and its adjacent islands.
