Summer 2023

Late June marked the start of summer and things started to heat up. As August comes to an end, along with blistering heat waves and extreme weather events, we continue to brace for more heat in September. We hope that everyone participating in 5 needles pine along the PCT community science project does so safely!

Do your research before you go! Check out the resources page from the Pacific Coast Trail Association to safely navigate the PCT: https://www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/backcountry-basics/

In case you missed it, check out the recording from the launch of our community science project held on April 6, 2023. Learn more in this presentation about the magnificent five-needle pines, why they are in trouble and how you can help monitor their health with use of the iNaturalist app.

Also, join Ecologist Aaron Wells to learn more about the ecology and threats to the 5-needle pines of western North America, with a focus on whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) in the North Cascades. All filming was conducted on non-wilderness lands of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.
