Itaya amicorum

Itaya amicorum is a medium-sized fan palm that is native to Brazil, Colombia and Peru. The only species in the genus Itaya, it was unknown to science until 1972.

Location 3

Brazil; Colombia; Peru.

Confined to the western Amazon regions of Brazil, Colombia and Peru. In Colombia it is known from a remote locality in a national park.

Description 3

SIngle trunked, fan leaved palm. Slender, solitary trunk that can grow to about 3 m (10 ft.) tall and holds a broad crown of very large, remarkable leaves, to 2 m (7 ft.) in diameter, that are silvery white below and divided into only 10 to 16 very broad segments. It is closely related to Chelyocarpus, with which it shares some botanically rather unspecialized features.

At a local level the trunk is burned for the production of salt and leaves are used for thatch.

Habitat Type 3

Can be found in the understorey of lowland rainforests.
