This common species has a slender stem with small straight prickles. The small leaves are oblong to rounded with double-toothed glandular margins. Flowers, normally solitary, are deep pink at maturity with a bright cluster of yellow anthers.

Distribution (circa 2001) 3

Typically found in shaded, wooded areas at 30–2000m from the Peninsula Ranges of San Diego county north to northwestern California, and from the central Sierra Nevada to the Modoc Plateau in northern California.
