The leaves and flowers of irises emerge from underground stems called rhizomes. Irises are unusual in having style branches that are petal like. The petals are white to greenish yellow at the base and delicately marked with purple lines or veins on the upper side.

Distribution (circa 2001) ³

Found in open, dry woodlands from 100–1000m from the Sacramento Valley to northwestern California.
