Stonecrop

CrassulaceaeSedum obtusatum ssp. boreale

Description 2

The Stonecrops can add beauty and color to the most unlikely places. They are able to grow in the crevices of boulders, on sheer jagged rock faces, and on rock ledges with a thin layer of soil that is "locked" in place by mosses and lichens. Plants like Stonecrop that occupy inhospitable sites fill a special niche. They can thrive in places that few other plants can colonize successfully.

Distribution (circa 2001) 3

Uncommon on outcrops from the high Cascade Ranges to the Sierra Nevada; 1400-2000 m.
