Mountain Dogwood

Cornus nuttallii

Description 2

Mountain Dogwood has very hard close-grained wood that is sometimes used in cabinetwork. This large flowered dogwood resembles the eastern C. florida more than other species of this genus, but it is rarely cultivated because it cannot tolerate the conditions of a garden setting. What look like large white petals are, in fact, modified leaves referred to as bracts. The actual flowers are small, greenish in color, and form a tight globular central mass.

Distribution (circa 2001) 3

Wooded areas and open forests below 2000 meters throughout the northern part of California, common throughout the Sierra Nevada.
