Distinguishing Features: Spiny seed balls that last into winter
Shape: 60 to 80 feet tall, pyramidal when young, rounded when old
Branching: Alternate
Leaf: Lobed, 5 to 7 lobes, 4 to 8 inches long and wide, green in color, red, burgundy, and purplish in Autumn
Flower: small yellowish-green flowers
Bark: Grayish brown, deeply furrowed with narrow ridges
Fruit or Seed: Long-stemmed, woody and bur-like spiny balls, 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter, change from green to brown
