Distinguishing Features: Red flowers, leaf stems and seed wings, changes color early in the fall, stem of the leaf is usually red

Shape: 40 to 70 feet tall, pyramidal or elliptical when young, less rounded or oval when older
Branching: Opposite
Leaf: lobed 2 to 4 inches long, 3 or 5-lobes
Flower: Red or orange, showy, in late March and April
Bark: young bark is smooth and light, ash-gray, older bark is scaly gray brown bark,
Fruit or Seed: Samaras, 0.75 inch long, often display some red color
