 Thallus: foliose, 1-6 cm in diam., loosely adnate, irregularly lobate; lobes: very irregular, +plane to somewhat wrinkled, separate, with fimbriately lacerated margins, 1-4 mm wide, 80-150 µm thick; apices: rotund, entire but more usually finely lobulate to fimbriate, usually erect or semi-erect; upper surface: dark brown to red-brown or sometimes medium gray, usually dull, usually distinctly wrinkled longitudinally, not isidiate (although lacerate margin might be mistaken for isidia); internal anatomy: with upper and lower cortices consisting of a single layer of irregularly isodiametrical cells 5-14 µm in diam., internally with loosely interwoven chains of Nostoc and hyphae; lower surface: light gray to cream-colored, smooth, with scattered tufts of white hairs; Apothecia: frequent, laminal, sessile, 0.2-0.7 mm wide; disc: brown to more usually red-brown, slightly concave to plane to convex; margin: thalline, concolorous with the thallus, usually lobulate or with coralloid outgrowths; exciple: euparaplectenchymatous, 20-70 µm thick centrally; hymenium: hyaline below and thinly yellow to brown above, 130-200 µm tall; paraphyses: unbranched, c. 1.5 µm wide, slightly inflated apically; subhymenium: pale yellow, 35-70 µm thick; asci: cylindrico-clavate, 8-spored; ascospores: hyaline, muriform, 5-9-septate transversely, 1-3-septate longitudinally, ellipsoid to subfusiform, 18-45 x 11-16 µm; Pycnidia: not observed; Spot tests: all negative; Secondary metabolites: none detected.; Substrate and ecology: on bark and among mosses over rocks in montane forests; World distribution: Europe, North and South America; Sonoran distribution: Arizona, southern California, and Baja California.; Notes: Leptogium lichenoides commonly occurs among mosses and is characterized by have a highly lacerated, filiform margin. Both L. gelatinosum and L. californicum have more regularly incised lobes.
