Walleyes(Sander vitreus) are a popular sport species that also supports a commercial fishery. Walleye are most common in the shallower portions of the big lakes, but also found in some of the larger rivers and inland lakes. Eat aquatic insect larvae and small fishes. Minnesota’s official state fish.
How to recognize: Body is yellowish green. Two fins on the back, the first supported by stiff spines, and the second supported by soft rays. Dark blotch in the rear corner of the first fin on the back. Tip of lower lobe of tail is white. Up to 2½ feet /0.8 meters long.
