Burbot(Lota lota) are basically freshwater cod. Many people find them delicious to eat, although there is not a large fishery for the species. They live along the bottom of the big lakes, hiding among rocks or in burrows. They come out to feed on small fishes, “shrimps,” etc. Have been found in the deepest parts of the Great Lakes and will also swim up some rivers, especially in the northern Great Lakes region.

How to recognize: Body shaped like an eel. One barbel /whisker under the chin. Two fins on the back, the first very short, and the second very long. Also a long fin along the bottom of the fish. Mottled brown. Up to 3 feet /0.9 meters long.
