Bloaters(Coregonus hoyi) live in the big lakes, usually a couple hundred feet below the surface. At that depth, they look normal. But when they are brought to the surface too quickly, their internal pressure causes them to expand or bloat. More abundant in the past, their numbers have declined due to competition and predation from invasive species.
How to recognize: Small fleshy fin on the back in front of the tail. Mouth slightly upturned. Moderately sized scales. Forked tail. Up to 1 foot /0.3 meters long.
