Golden Shiners(Notemigonus crysoleucas) are a common and widespread species in streams and ponds. Most abundant where there is no current and there are lots of plants. Can form schools. Often used as bait.
How to recognize: A relatively tall and thin minnow. Low ridge running along the belly of the fish from the anus to the pair of fins immediately in front of it. Larger individuals can be golden in color. Smaller individuals have a diffuse black stripe from the head to the tail. Up to 10 inches /25 centimeters long.
