Celtis occidentalis, the Common hackberry, is a medium-size deciduous tree native to North America, also known as a sugarberry, nettletree, beaverwood, northern hackberry, and American hackberry. It is a moderately long-lived hardwood with a light-colored wood, yellowish gray to light brown with yellow streaks. In Vermont, this species primarily occurs in floodplains along larger rivers such as the Winooski, Connecticut, and Otter Creek, and every once in a while may also be found on limy ledges. It's not in the colder parts of the state and even in warm areas its population is limited.
