Rare Species - Obscuring locations or making them private

Dear DU wildlife observations project members

Did you know that when making observations on iNaturalist you can choose to obscure an observation?

You can do this on the app by clicking on "Location Visibility : Open" and changing it to "Location visibility : Obscured" or "Private".
It can also be done on desktop by clicking on the "location is visible" drop down option and changing it to "location is obscured" or "location is private".

When obscuring an observation you can chose to make the real coordinates of the species only visible to the project admins (myself and Prof. Steve Willis).

This will assist us in recording the location of rare plant species such as orchids, species prone to being foraged such as edible mushrooms and species prone to being hunted or poached such as badgers.

So if you find such a species on campus, please do remember to obscure it's location!

Best Wishes

Durham City nature Challenge

Dear DU wildlife observations group members.

If you haven’t heard already, City Nature Challenge 2024: North East England will be taking place form the 26th to the 29th of April.

This event is being coordinated by the Environmental Records Information Centre as part of the global city nature challenge initiative.

It is a great opportunity to get yourself and your community engaged with the wildlife which inhabit it, as well as teach you about the species living in your local area. It also presents a great opportunity relax or refresh during this busy period of the year.

During a visit from the University of York's Biodiversity team, we were challenged to take part and beat their number of observations, so let's get as many people joining in as possible!

It’s easy to get involved, just follow the below steps:

• Join the City Nature Challenge 2024: North East England project.
Address: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-north-east-england

• Photograph or audio-record wildlife from April 26 - April 29, 2024

• Upload your observations to the iNaturalist app by 9am on May 6.

• Get others involved, such as your friends, neighbours, local clubs or schools!

To find out more you can visit: City Nature Challenge - ERIC North East
Please do share this event with as many people as possible!
Results will be announced on Monday 6 May, so be sure to upload all your observations by then.

City Nature Challenge 2024: North East England is coordinated by the Environmental Records Information Centre (ERIC) North East.

Thanks for all your superb observations so far!

Best Wishes
Durham University, Greenspace Team
